In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon in Spokane, Washington, and thought: wait, why isn't there one of these for dads? Her father, William Jackson Smart — a Civil War veteran — had raised six children as a single parent after losing his wife. She felt he deserved the recognition.
Spokane hosted its first Father's Day celebration on June 19, 1910. It spread slowly, became an official proclamation under President Johnson in 1966, and was signed into law as a national holiday by President Nixon in 1972. It's celebrated on the third Sunday in June every year.
